Hypnosis FAQs

Whenever I talk to people, they have loads of questions about hypnosis.  It's without a doubt, one of the more intriguing tools for personal change that's out there.  Having done hypnosis for over 9 years now, I've gotten a sense of the most common questions that people have about hypnosis and you'll find them below.

If you have any questions that aren't covered below, feel free to e-mail me and I'll do my best to answer them.

So sit back, relax, take a deep breath and prepare yourself to learn about hypnosis...

Why would I want to do hypnosis?

Hypnosis is about creating change in your life by first changing your thoughts at both the conscious and unconscious levels.  When you change your thoughts, you change your actions and ultimately, your outcomes that you are seeking in your life.

I've worked with people from a broad range of backgrounds with a large variety of concerns although if I was to break it down into 3 large categories, it would look something like this:

"I'm afraid of ________".

People have all sorts of fears that are completely irrational and yet they exert tremendous control over the person.  Fears are usually the result of old experiences that are blown out of proportion and lodged in our unconscious minds.  Phobias and anxieties are perfect examples of extreme fears.  Here's a quick list of fears that I've helped people with:

  • Anxiety attacks
  • Drop attacks
  • Fear of public speaking/ being interviewed
  • Fear of medical/dental procedures
  • Claustrophobia
  • Fear of failure and success
  • Fear of conflict
  • Fear of cold calling and other aspects of sales

If you've got a fear that's holding you back, you'll be amazed at how quickly it can be extinguished and a positive, helpful belief put in it's place.

"I want to change a habit"

The most classic habits that hypnosis addresses of course are smoking and weight loss.  These are really just the tip of the iceberg though.  Habits are largely unconscious behaviour sets - ask any smoker and she will tell you that they can have a cigarette in their mouth and lit without even thinking of it.

There are habits if behaviour such as smoking and there are habits of thought/emotion such as getting angry in certain situations.  There are also positive habits - planning out ones day and expressing gratitude are two examples.

Our experience of our life largely lies at the feet of our most regular habits.  Successful people have successful habits, unsuccessful people, unsuccessful habits.

Hypnosis is very helpful at removing or installing habits because of it's ability to re-program the unconscious.

What habits would you like to get rid of?  How would your life be different if you did?

What new habits would you like to have in your life?  How would your life improve if you had them?

"I want bigger and better results in my life!"

This is where coaching and hypnosis blend beautifully.  Coaching helps you think bigger and set up their ideal and "impossible" future and hypnosis helps program your brain to move in that direction.

There's no shortcut to success - it does require focus, time and discipline.  With that said, the pathway can be shortened dramatically and be a lot more fun with the help of hypnosis.  When your conscious and unconscious minds are in alignment, there's a dramatic synergistic effect that supercharges your results in a fraction of the time it might otherwise take.

Will I lose control during hypnosis?

No.  You are always under your own control during hypnosis.  My role is to facilitate your process, not control it.  You will not do anything against your will or be made to cluck like a chicken (unless you really want to).

If I'm a good subject am I gullible/stupid etc.

Actually, it's just the opposite.  Being a good subject co-relates well with above average intelligence and a good imagination.

Will I remember anything?

Most people remember their hypnotic experiences.  In some cases there may be some amnesia, which spontaneously happens in deep trance.  The efficacy of the hypnosis session is not better in either situation so whether you remember all, some or none of your session, you can trust that it will work.

What does it feel like?

For the most part, hypnosis feels very relaxing.  Both your body and mind can let go of tremendous amounts of tension during hypnosis.  You may also experience different emotions during hypnosis such as relief, joy, sadness, happiness and anything else that is relevant to a given situation.  This all happens in a safe and supportive atmosphere that will help you get the biggest benefit from your session.

What happens during a session?

While each session can be different, we typically will see what's changed from the last session (in the first session, we talk about what's happened and what's brought you here), decide on what you want to work on and the outcomes that you're looking for.  Once we've done all of that, we do the hypnosis work to "program in" the new outcomes into your unconscious mind.

How long is a session?

The first session is typically 75 minutes with follow up sessions being 60 minutes.

Does it have to be done in person?

While I do most of my sessions in person, I have done hypnosis with people across North America over the phone with good effect.

How many sessions does it normally take?

How many sessions it takes depends on several factors:

    • How great a change are you making?
    • How eager are you to change?
    • How good a hypnotic subject are you?
    • What created the original issue and how deeply ingrained is it?

With that said, my typical session set is 3-8 visits, with a usual frequency of every other week.

How much do the sessions cost?

My fee is $125.00/session.  In some cases, insurance benefits have covered the cost of these sessions.
