The Big Picture


Your brain is a 3 to 5 pound electro-gelatinous miracle containing billions of cells which have more connections between them than are stars in the universe.  It is without a doubt the most sophisticated computer around yet nobody ever gave us an instruction manual to tell us how to use it or a repair manual to tell us how to fix it.


When your brain is working, it produces electricity from the chemical reactions in its cells,  We can read these electrical impulses by using something called an electroencephalogram, or EEG as it is more commonly called.  If we were to look at your EEG, we would see your brain producing different speed waves.  For instance, if you are very tired, your brain will be producing slow (or delta) waves.


If you're daydreaming and letting your mind wander, then you would be producing theta waves, which are still pretty slow.  If you are in a relaxed yet focused state, we would likely observe a larger amount of alpha waves.  And finally, of you're in intense concentration and focus, we would likely notice a large number of beta waves in your EEG profile.


The big problem comes when you're producing brain waves that aren't quite right for the environment you're in.  If you're trying to sleep and your brain is producing too many beat waves, you will experience insomnia.  If you're trying to be focused and alert but your brain is producing too many theta waves, you will find yourself daydreaming and have trouble focusing.


So how do we help your brain to produce the right brain waves for the right situation?


To understand how we do this, you have to understand one other property of your brain.  Your brain will naturally entrain to signals in its environment.  That's why when you hear music your foot will tend to tap to the beat of the music.  faster music will cause your brain waves to speed up and slower music will cause your brain waves to slow down.
